New puppet purchase

It's been a while since I have posted, not sure what route I want to go with this blog. I still want to make puppets and I have so many hobbies, but funds are low and life is getting hectic.

I found this guy at a local thrift shop. He is very well made, but for only $4.95 I couldnt resist buying him. The Company that actually sells these puppes is called Sunny Puppets, so check the link out if yu are looking to buy a puppet instead of making one they are originally $39.95. Each comes with a detachable arm rod. The few puppets I have made I always wanted to make them full bodied and this has given me a better idea on how to accomplish this task. Now to save some money and collect the items I need so I can create more new puppets for my collection.

While in Colorado Springs I was fortunate to meet a great group of friends, once I get some pictures I may post them here. One guy I will never forget is Jun, we decided to get a tattoo while we where there and found a place called Tatttoo America ran by a Vet named Bob. I got my kids names done in Japanese lettering and Jun got himself a geko in his arm. Maybe when he grows big and strong it will turn into a dragon like he had designed. Ha-Ha! Just wanted to share some pictures.

While I was in Colorado Springs I had a great opportunity to meet new and interesting people. One guy at times greeted us with " What's up? Also while I was there one of the guys decided to go to a Hot Wing restaurant and try and take on the challenge they offer. I have been out of town for the last 6 weeks and before I left I had made one final puppet. Although I didn't have time to post it before I left, I had to get it on line the minute I had a chance after I arrived. Hope you like him.

He is a glorified sock puppet who resembles a snake. I tailored him after a used car sales man we had in colorado springs. He kept saying that he was prior military and that military takes care of military. At the time my wife was pregnant with our second child and he sold us this "reliable minivan". He keeps saying that military always takes care of military. Two days later the Van caught on fire in the middle of the highway. So you can see the resemblance on why I chose a snake looking character. He wears a button up shit and a tie and has his silver earing and rings, to look like he has money. He is a fast talker 30 year old, who is separated from the military due to a medical condition. Maybe he was separated from the military due to his tounge?

Technical: There where no deviations to the pattern, this is my second Glorified Sock Puppet Pattern, but the first one that has been completed. I used everything the pattern stated and did not deviate in any way. I found his clothes in a thrift shop and his rings came from a party store. His earing we had in an old jewrly box and decided to use them since no one here would wear them. His eyes are small ping pong balls and the black in his eyes where cut from some moving eyes I bought at michaels. - Carlos

Puppet Television

With it's first episode "Chino's Arrivals", it gives puppet fans something new to watch on the internet. The material is not really kid friendly. There are many profane words used through the episode. I did enjoy the show, but would not let my children watch it. I am not knocking it in any way, there is no rule that all puppet shows should be for children, I only mention it if you are a parent to make sure you know what you are letting your children watch before hand. All in all good 1st episode, and it is to be continued. Check them out and you decide.

My Truck, washed and rims cleaned, plus I removed the topper it had on. (The bed topper is for sale BTW) It does have a lot of work to be done on it. it has a lot of rust on the bottom and the driver side door, where the hinge is at is rusted so its hard to open and close the door.

It is a pretty truck, I had received a PDF file with some truck views I opened it up in photoshop and made a new line drawing so I can start working on a paint scheme. I think I will leave it orange, but I will paint the top white and leave the rest orange. I plan on having a Puertorrican flag painted on the top of the roof like the General Lee, but all this after I get the rust removed. I also want t o lower it half way from where it is now and add Gull wing Doors.

New version of my old drawing

A while back I had posted this POST about seeing if someone could re draw my old drawing of my friends. I had an awesome guy from The Muppet Central Forum hook me up and re-do the drawing. I wanted to share his work.

He was nice enough to send me the PSD file and I just changed the colors of the skin to make it match a little better to what our skin tones actually are. Here is my different skin colored version. I didn't make any changes other than the skin color.

I am very grateful and I think it looks 100% better than what I did back in 1995. Although I still want to redesign the animated version of us, I have been writing our story from when we where young and personally I think it would make a great cartoon or comic book. Maybe one day my drawing skills will improve and I will get to redesign them and eventually make 3D version of all of us.

I updated the image to add the names of who the characters are supposed to be.

He asked to remain anonymous, he knows what he did and I really want to say Thank You from the bottom of my Heart.

Digital puppetry

A few years ago I was playing with a program called Cinema 4D and since I was having trouble making foam puppets, I decided to make them in 3D. It was a lot more difficult, but it was a fun experiment. I wanted to post and share my attempts. I never did add bones to move him around, but thanks to a fellow C4D user he helped make the skin texture to make it look more like Muppet Fleece.

Another version of a puppet idea I had of a robot puppet. Never made it past the head, I guess I developed a creative block for a while.

Marionette

A few years ago we went to a fair in a town called Benton City and we saw someone selling this pet marionettes. We wanted to buy one but we didn't have that much money at the time. After coming home Sunday evening, we went through our craft box and noticed we had some scraps so we started sewing the body, we got some fishing line and some wooden sticks and created our own version of the marionettes they where selling at the fair. All in all they came out fairly good. If you ever have kids and some stick and fishing line you will know that after a few times playing with something like this, it will come tangled and a pain in the (you know what) to untangle. We made about 4 of them, but this where the only pictures we could find. It was so much fun playing with them that I am contemplating making another one in the future.

Looking for a truck the other day, so we can take our junk to the dumpster, we ran across this beast. It has a lot of rust and had an ugly topper on the back. We removed it today! What a heavy son of a gun it was. So, it will never win any beauty contests and with all the rust I don't know how much it can be salvaged, but we where thinking of doing the best that we could and I thought it would look great painted dark orange but on the hood have a puppet drawing bursting out of it. So if you follow my blog, and have any ideas please post them here. I would love to hear your opinions.

Old Failed Attempts

I was looking through CD's the last few days and I found some attempts I had tried making foam heads. It's amazing how close I actually was to making my first foam puppet. First I was using the wrong sized foam. If I would have started with 1/2 inch instead of one 1 inch, I would have probably would have been making puppets a lot sooner. It's too bad too because I felt so discouraged that I didn't try again until 3 years later. I was able to make new puppets using the Project Puppet pattern. Just wanted to show some of my trial and errors. I was trying to make a Fraggle Rock type puppet back then.

I am going to start posting weekly and maybe more if I have more to say, but I could not resist talking about this. If you visit myspace this guy needs to be in your friends list. Cool thing is that he is in the same state I am in and would definitely have to try to have him meet my puppet pals. His videos a pretty funny, you can tell that the people behind, or under Puppet Tom are having a great time.

I am working on a new puppet myself right now and this is what I envisioned when I started making my puppets to blog with them and share funny tidbits of my life. Check it out, if anything you will get a nice chuckle!

Before I changed my online name to Bored @ Home Everything I did I would put "LOS" on it. I was making Video CD's of all my work and this little clip was in front of all my videos. Now that DVD's are more popular and a new name change I have to recreate a new intro video for all my work. I thought I share my old little creation. Although it is not so fancy I did have a great time making it...Now if creativity would flow a little smoother I would create a new one with my new on name. Gotta get that thinking cap on.

Character: MaMaMiA
She is a human puppet who has a brown shaggy hair and always wears a bandana to cover up her mated shaggy hair. She is a teenager who is very talented in the ways of cooking, she is also dating Zac the pink Mohawk puppet. She is very dramatic, loves to praise others and offers advice when people seek her, and mimics every one to lighten the mood.

Technical: There where no deviations to the pattern, this being the 4th foam puppet, but most of the work was done by one of my child. This is her first Puppet, so we did not change the pattern in any way. I helped her by putting final touches to MaMaMiA like sewing areas that she left open and gluing a few parts to the foam head. Her hoodie shirt coat came from a thrift shop and the fur for her hair was already purchased a few years ago for a previous project that was never completed and was also used on the Zac puppet. We used 1/2-inch foam for the body and head. The eyes where made from googoly eyes uses for home made dolls and the nose was an eye we cut open to use the black circle as her nose. - Carlos

So it's not officially finished, but it is almost there. I am so excited she has gotten this much done. When I first started making this puppets, she didn't seem that interested. Little by little she started working on her creation. I did help her somewhat, some sewing and gluing there. Like my other kid's puppet she did 99% of it. I am very proud!

4th Foam Puppet

So I am waiting for my olders kid to finish her first puppet. But I also wanted to post some pictures of her progress from a few days ago. She already has the body finished and she is decorationg it today. Once she is happy with it I will add the final pictures for all to see. She is very excited.

Playing with stop motion

One of my other hobbies is learning stop motion animation. Although this did not turn out like I expected, it was a fun little project and I had a great time doing it.

I was trying to do some stop motion and some green screen at the same time. I messed up by having my lego too close to the back ground and not adding proper lighting. I did the background in Cinema 4D but I should have made it longer. It was only an experiment in stop motion so I am some what happy with it. This proves I still have a lot more to learn.

Character: Hoey
She is a monster puppet and has a weird sense of humor. She looks so innocent, but likes to play adult jokes, you would never guess she is 21 years old. She likes to shock people with her comments and gets people to argue with her all the time. She thinks she is never wrong and has to have the last word in everything she says.
Technical: There where no deviations to the pattern, this being my 2nd foam puppet I still don't have the confidence to change it around. I went to Walmart and purchased her fur, it was a bit pricey at $9.98 for the yard. Luckily I only needed 1 yard for her. Her dress came from a thrift store and she wanted a Disney design to fool people into thinking she is a nice monster. I used 1/2-inch foam. The eyes where made from foam balls cut in half and the black in her yes where cut from some moving eyes I bought at Michaels. I also found some doll eye lashes at the store that I cut to size and glued to the eye balls.

He is a monster puppet who has a pink Mohawk. He is a rocker, but also likes baseball and is on a local team. He is also 21 years old. Not only does he like Rock music, but he likes all kinds of music including Rap. He likes to go to the schools and loves the attention he gets. He steals the show every time.

Here is my daughters puppets. This was also made with the Project Puppet Pattern. He still needs to get dressed and I will post pictures of Him once we get his outfit on him. I helped her by just sewing a few parts for her. Since she is learning to sew. There where a few minor mistakes, but she cut out all the pieces, glued all the foam pieces. I would say 99% of the work was done by her, I am so proud.

Hi all! Some of you have gone to my MSN Space at http://spaces.msn.com/video567/ and I am a bit unhappy with the way it looks. I hate that you have to write your post and can't put the pictures in between the comments. All the pictures go to the bottom. They do hold 500 pictures a month and Blogger only 300. It is a small price to pay to have the look that you want.

Nose tutorial by Shawn Sorrell

Here is quick and easy way to make a nose out of felt.

First draw a circle on a piece of felt and cut it out. I used the bottom of a spray paint can here to draw my circle.
Then with a hand needle do what is called a gathering stitch around the outside of the circle. You can see how that is done in the image to the left.

You then place a bit of cotton or polyfill in the middle of the circle. The finished nose will be a bit smaller then the piece amount of filling you use since it will compact down. I always roll the polyfill in my hand into a bit of a ball to compress it a bit so the end size is closer.

You then pull the thread to gather the felt around the filler. The smaller the stitches you take in the second step the more creases you have but this will make your "nose" smoother in the long run. Once you have your nose you flip it over and hand stitch it to the puppets face. If you did not cut the thread you used to gather your circle you already have enough thread to stitch it on!

You can make other shaped noses using this same basic idea.

Sock Puppet Part II

My daughter named him Brendon, not finished yet and I used a foam ball cut in half for his eyes, I didn't have pingpong balls and I really wanted to make him look more like Kermit. But being my first sock type puppet I really like how simple and fun he is. Will work on his arms this week, if time permits.

A basic sock puppet, though relatively easy to construct, can provide quite a challenge in puppeteering. Well, it was that time again, we still have a little of the puppet fever and a while back I had bought this pink and orange fur at walmart. It was going to be for a puppet for my daughter, but she didn't really like it. So I used it to make another monster puppet, I still have more to go but I have done the body, head and mouth. I already sewed the arms and hands, but I am still waiting to buy some doll joints to attach them. Here are some preliminary pics.

Character: After much debate and also asking a question on the muppet Central Forum called - help me name my puppet!! (http://forum.muppetcentral.com/showthread.php?t=25688 ) many of the members gave us many suggestions. The deal was that I would call them out to my 3 year old and she would choose. We finally came up with the name "OTTO". He is a monster but a nice one. The one problem we have with him is that he is always saying "Elmo had to die, because I needed his eyes!" My 3 year old always corrects him and brings out her Elmo Plush doll and point to him, telling him that Elmo is still here. He likes to talk a lot with children and

discuss their day, asks about school and what they learned. When he doesn't repeat what the children said they learned in school correctly, the children have no fear in correcting him. I don't think he is dumb. I think he does that to reinforce in children what they learned that day.

Technical: I used the pattern the way it said on the instructions. This was my first foam puppet

I wanted to make sure I followed directions 100% so I could learn from it. His skin is made of Blue fur from JoAnn's fabric it was on sale for $3.99 a yard and I used 1/2 inch foam also from the same store. It is hard to find reticulated foam in my area and since I got my pattern I wanted to start right away. The eyes and nose came from an elmo that played the guitar. It was given to me at work since I love puppets, but the arm that was attached to the guitar was cut and the electronics were broken and it would not play, I figured his donor card was filled out and he wouldn't mind donating his eyes to science. I had found some plastic doll arm hinges a few years ago and I saved them, with this puppet I used the hinges for his arms so they can move up and down also. I did not use wires for his fingers.

Update on Puppet

I started a new puppet today, I cannibalized and elmo toy for the eyes, but I used the rotondo pattern from ProjectPuppet. I had bought some blue fur at Joans Fabric and decided to use it for this puppet. I still need to attach the arms and hands. Maybe dress him up, not sure what to do with him or what to name him, but I like him so far. I think I jumped the gun on the nose but I wanted an orange nose on him and not its a little late to remove it since it is hot glued in place.

Well I received the pattern I ordered from Project puppet at http://www.projectpuppet.com/. Their logo can be seen here. So after working all night on it until 2 am I finally have some progress pictures. Granted I am using the wrong foam, it is too thick. But before I go an buy extra items and supplies I wanted to have a rough estimate of what I can do with it. So far I am very pleased with it. As I continue to work on this I will add more photos of the progress.

I don't know anyone who has never seen the Muppets™ or any other type of show and wondered how it was done. Well I found a lot of information and some puppet kits at Arm's Length Productions and also at Bible puppets. I bought the pattern and made the puppets at the bottom here. Not the fanciest puppets in the world, but great for a beginner to learn making their own puppets. Arm's Length has very professional looking puppets and their kit includes everything you need to get started making one for your own. I'm not endorsing their products in any way! I'm just trying to share some information with you in case you are interested.

So tonight I was looking for puppet inspiration and I happen to look at this blog http://puppetbuilder.blogspot.com/ and I noticed he had linked me. It's pretty awesome to see your name or site in someone else's site. I had to return the favor and I added him to my link section. Blogging is very new to me and I don't k now how frequently I will do it.
